Founding Story

1980 — The inventor

Told he'd never ski again.

In 1980 a car hit Jim Castillo head-on at forty-five miles an hour. When his surgeon said he'd never ski again, Jim welded a brace in his brother's shop and was on his way to Mammoth three days later.

The invention

It started as a motocross goggle.

Goggles press on a rider's nose and close it off. Jim sank magnets into the goggle foam and put a steel tab on the nose, so the goggle pulled it open instead. He called it a cheesy clip.

The first night

“Can you sleep with this on?”

Nobody had considered it. Dave bent two paper clips around two magnets, wrapped them in electrical tape, and gave it to his wife, who'd slept in nasal strips for years. She hasn't slept without one since.

The family

It took the whole family.

Intake has always been a family business, in the most literal sense. An inventor who wouldn't settle, a son who saw what the cheesy clip could become, a daughter who held it all together, a son-in-law who bet everything he had on it, and a son designing what comes next.

2019–2022 — The hard years

Most brands leave this part out.

Demand outran production. Jim had borrowed against his ranch to file the patents, and lost it. Alex sold his truck, signed a $250,000 personal guarantee, and packed every order by hand for over a year.
